As you (may) know, we successfully applied for and received designation for the Beacon Hill Historic District that includes the land where we lived, owned businesses, attended churches and school before we were displaced by urban renewal. Our Historic District is the FIRST and ONLY historic district in the City of Decatur that specifically:
Recognizes the contributions of the formerly enslaved African Americans who created the Beacon Hill Community
Honors the life, history and legacy of Black residents and black-owned businesses that thrived in Beacon Hill through the late 1960s
We will commemorate this Historic milestone on-site at Decatur Day this year. Plans include a commemorative ceremony and recognition of our Beacon Hill ancestors and elders.
Please feel free to contact the Organizers listed below if you have questions, concerns or need additional information. See you on Saturday, September 5th.
